Each year I am asked to document this special event to anyone devoted to the Catholic faith and our Blessed Mother, Virgin Mary but particularly to those of Mexican heritage. I often say this is my very favorite assignment because it not only provides a beautiful spectacle of color for my images but more so, it gives us all such a good sense of security and belonging to something bigger than our petty little concerns on this planet.
The story of a man who was Aztec but converted to Christianity and witnessed the vision of the Virgin Mary on December 9, 1531 and again December 12th when she instructed him to collect roses.
The scent of hundreds and hundred of roses fill the air! Whether you believe the account of his story or not, it serves to this day as an example of how faith can motivate humanity to sustain themselves in all types of bad circumstances and even attain incredible accomplishments!
The sense of security and serenity that comes with the practice of one’s faith is a message that is all too lacking in today’s world.
I personally feel a kinship with any group of people who have a strong belief system and tradition in their lives.
Everyone is always so jubilant and welcoming at this event!
As a sliver of the moon peeks through the clouds over Saint Nicholas, a combined sense of reverence and contentment!
